TODAY'S TOP STORIES

1) Ballots from the primary election on Tuesday are still being counted, so the results aren’t set in stone yet β€” especially in the tight races. Here’s what I’m seeing as of Thursday morning, though. For the statewide U.S. Senate seat left empty when Dianne Feinstein died last year, there are two candidates with a significant lead, which should take them both to the general election this November: Democrat Adam Schiff, a longtime state politician, and Republican Steve Garvey, a former professional baseball player who’s new to politics. For our local second-district seat in the U.S. House of Representatives, incumbent Democrat Jared Huffman and Republican Chris Coulombe are ahead. As for the contentious race to replace Healdsburg politician Jim Wood, who’s giving up his seat in the second district of the California State Assembly: Republican Michael Greer is in first place, and a few of the Democratic candidates are neck and neck for the other spot. Santa Rosa City Councilmember Chris Rogers is just barely leading the pack today, with California Democratic Party Chair Rusty Hicks right behind, followed by Healdsburg City Councilmember Ariel Kelley. Measure-wise, that statewide one about mental health funding is almost at a dead tie, with a sliver of a lead for β€œYes” β€” and Measure H for more fire-department funding in Sonoma County is more of a landslide β€œYes.” Meanwhile, our three new Sonoma County Superior Court judges look like they’ll be Kristine Burk, Paul Lozada and Kenneth English. And Biden and Trump will move forward in the race for president, of course. Healdsburg City Councilmember Ron Edwards shared this pic from an election-night watch party he attended at local restaurant Molti Amici, hosted by his fellow councilmember and Assembly District 2 candidate Ariel Kelley. She's pictured on the left there, with her family on the right. "While we wait to count every vote, I just wanted to say thank you," Ariel wrote on Facebook that night. "Thank you to everyone who knocked on doors, made phone calls, or talked to their neighbors. Thank you to everyone who hosted a house party, wrote a postcard to a voter, or chipped in your hard-earned dollars. None of this would be possible without you, and I am so proud of what we’ve built together." (Photo courtesy of Ron Edwards/Facebook)

2) The planning process will officially begin tonight for a new, β€œmulticultural” wellness center here in Healdsburg. β€œWe are thrilled to share the exciting news that we are beginning work with our partners for the development of a vision for a Community Wellness Center,” local nonprofit CorazΓ³n Healdsburg wrote in their latest newsletter. β€œLed by the Healthcare Foundation Northern Sonoma County, fueled by a $285,000 grant from Providence, and together with our partners, we’ll be kicking off a community convening and visioning process for residents of Healdsburg to explore the potential for a multicultural Community Wellness Center.” It all starts with a session tonight at 5:30 p.m. in the Healdsburg Community Center. CorazΓ³n writes: β€œWhat do you think a multicultural center could and should look like in Healdsburg? Join us for a conversation this week to share your vision! … Space is limited so please call our team at 707-615-4567 to let us know you’ll be there and reserve your spot.” The running name for the new center has been Nuestra Comunidad Sana, or β€œour healthy community.” When officials from the Healthcare Foundation first announced it last month, they said they see Healdsburg’s future wellness center as a β€œsafe, vibrant, green, community space of belonging” where locals can seek help for their health and well-being. β€œMoreover, the project advances the recommendation of the City of Healdsburg’s own recent [Diversity, Equity & Inclusion] report,” foundation officials said, β€œwhich pointed to the need for a multicultural community center for residents.” Two sister centers are also being planned to our north and south, in Cloverdale and Windsor. 3) Another planning process attracting lots of community opinions right now is what the team behind Healdsburg’s fanciest restaurant β€” SingleThread, she of three Michelin stars β€” and parent company Vertice Hospitality will do with the Raven film center, which they’ll be leasing for the next quarter century, and the office building they bought around the corner. The hospitality company hosted a community meeting inside the Raven last month to share all their ideas and hear from locals β€” including some of the 60 neighbors who signed a letter last summer, expressing concern that the β€œcomplimentary hospitality experiences” that Vertice was reportedly planning at both sites would be β€œunaffordable to local residents and foster more hospitality imbalance in Healdsburg.” In the letter, they also requested that Vertice β€œinteract with the immediate residential neighborhood and the Healdsburg community, as early as possible, to share your vision with your neighbors.” So yeah, that happened about a month ago β€” and it was reportedly β€œthe first of many community gatherings” Vertice has vowed to host on the subject. One attendee, Merrilyn Joyce, now writes about her experience in the Sonoma County Gazette. She says that β€œstanding in the nostalgic red-carpeted theater’s lobby on Feb. 7, 2024, felt like being in a time warp” β€” and that, while being β€œgreeted with Japanese-inspired popcorn, some amazing cookie concoctions, and a glass of wine,” she thought: β€œThis might be my closest encounter to a Single Thread food experience.” Anyway, here’s what Merrilyn says she learned at the meeting from SingleThread Chef Kyle Connaughton and Vertice CEO Tony Greenburg: β€œThough they mentioned identifying 70-80 ideas, they only revealed general uses: 150 North St. will have a β€˜5-room’ hotel, with possible retail and residential; the movie theater will include both restaurant and retail. Neither elaborated after Greenburg hinted, β€˜we had this idea and sort of needed two sites to do it.’ These vague details left many curious for specifics. β€˜What was your vision when you first considered acquiring the movie theater lease?’ was answered from different angles. First, Chef Connaughton said it was disturbing looking down across the street upon the shuttered Raven from their Single Thread restaurant and lodgings, especially with homeless camped out around the Raven entrance. When broker Eric Drew offered them a long-term lease, they thought, this is our opportunity to control the property’s destiny, to protect it from outsiders with unknown motives. In other words, β€˜If not us, who? If not this, what?’ Briefly, they considered keeping some movie center β€˜elements’ until learning of AVFilm Center’s plans. CEO Greenburg took the mic adding, initially they saw an opportunity for wine storage and more office space.” Healdsburg City Councilmember Chris Herrod, who was also at the Raven meeting, writes in his latest newsletter that β€œthis was not an unveiling,” and that Vertice is β€œstill developing their concepts.” However, he writes, β€œthe desire to face the community’s concerns openly is commendable and encouraging.” (Source: Sonoma County Gazette & Chris Herrod via Mailchimp & Healdsburg Tribune & Healdsburg Tribune)

IN MEMORIAM

Well-known Healdsburg history buff and decorated U.S. Marines veteran Jack Trotter passed away last week at the age of 80. According to the Healdsburg Museum, he was a β€œmilitary historian and licensed antique appraiser” who advised the museum on β€œcollections, research and exhibitions.” More from Jack’s obituary: β€œHe served two tours with the Unit 5th Marine Regiment where he received two purple hearts for his service in Vietnam. After his time serving in the military, he settled down in Healdsburg, CA where he spent most of his remaining years. During these years he was an active member of his community, participating in the rotary and the local school board. He was an avid war historian and gun collector. His collection included guns from as far back as the Civil War. He was a member of the Healdsburg Federated Church for many years. He worked for PG&E until his retirement. He is survived by his wife and dance partner, Lis, who he married on September 20, 2002. … He is also survived by his children, Kathy Muhlbeier, Bryan Trotter, Heather Andrews, Christian Bach, Pernille Bach, and Susanne Bach, as well as 7 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. A private military service will be held in his honor. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Wounded Warrior Project.” (Source: Legacy.com & Healdsburg Museum via Facebook)
